How to Make a Rubberband Operated Car

We love cars that can move under their own power, and it is so satisfying to make a toy like that yourself. Building a simple rubber-band-powered car amuses kids of all ages, and it also provides a valuable lesson in momentum and tension. It is a great activity to share with a child and pass on a love of physics without the child even knowing it.

Things You'll Need

  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • 1/8-inch-diameter wooden skewer
  • Masking tape
  • 2 faucet washers
  • 2 CDs
  • Poster putty
  • 1 rubber band

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a 5- by 6-inch piece of corrugated cardboard with the corrugation running along the 6-inch length of the rectangle. Mark the half-way point along the 5-inch side with the pencil, and make a mark 1 inch to each side of the half-way point.

    • 2

Draw lines 1 1/2 inches long from the edge with the marks toward the center of the cardboard. Cut on each of the lines and cut out the rectangles they make to make one large notch on one side of the cardboard rectangle.

    • 3

Push a wooden skewer through the corrugated holes across the notch in the cardboard close to the edge. Twist the skewer to make sure it rotates freely in the holes.

    • 4

Wrap a piece of tape around the skewer where it passes through the notch, and fold a tab so the end does not stick to the tape or the skewer. You might need to experiment a little with the tab to make sure it holds the rubber band.

    • 5

Slide a faucet washer over one end of the skewer and push the CD hole over it. Use the poster putty to stick the CD to the washer and the washer to the skewer so that when you twist the skewer, it turns the CD. Repeat this step on the other end of the skewer.

    • 6

Tape one side of the rubber band to the edge of the cardboard opposite the notch with the axle and wheels. Pull the opposite end over the tape catch on the axle and turn the axle around toward the back several times.

    • 7

Set the CD wheels on the floor and let go. Race your rubber band car across the floor.
