How to Design a Cardboard Car

The imagination of a young child is an incredibly powerful force. Out of a pile of cardboard boxes, children can make forts, ships, homes or cars. If your kid happens to love cars, you can help him make a more permanent car to play in. It's a very simple and fun afternoon activity with a lot of room for him to express himself.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cardboard box
  • Marker
  • 5 paper plates
  • Scissors or utility knife
  • 5 split pins
  • Paper, glitter, glue and any other items for decorating the car

Instructions

    • 1

Trace a paper plate on the sides of the box, one in each corner. These are where the wheels of the car will go eventually.

    • 2

Draw the windshield and driver's seat on the box. Both of these will be on the top, and the windshield will fold up. The shape and location of the driver's seat will depend on the size of the box and the style of car you're aiming to make. Mark the pieces you want to cut out with an X.

    • 3

Add any other options to the vehicle, like doors and windows. These also depend on the size of the box you have. See References and Resources for more ideas on the kinds of options and styles of car you can make.

    • 4

Cut the pieces of the car out of the cardboard with your scissors or utility knife. Kids should take care when cutting the cardboard, as they could get hurt.

    • 5

Fold the windshield up and assemble the other options based on your design. The car should take its final shape now.

    • 6

Darken the wheel marks you made in step 1. Color them in with a marker.

    • 7

Draw a steering wheel onto one of the paper plates. Feel free to take up the entire plate, and make any cut-outs you would like. Decorate the wheel however you would like.

    • 8

Attach the steering wheel to the car, on the windshield. Affix it to the cardboard using one of the split pins.

    • 9

Color in and decorate the four remaining paper plates as wheels. While most cars have wheels that are all the same size, shape and color, you are welcome to decorate them however you would like.

    • 10

Affix the wheels to the car chassis in the wheel wells you drew using the remaining split pins.

    • 11

Decorate the rest of your car with anything that you and your kid want to put on it. Wait for any glue or paint to dry before playing in the car.
