How to Battery Power a Toy Car

Give an old toy car some new life with a charge of battery power. Installing a 9 volt hobby motor and battery pack takes just a little time and the use of a few tools. It only works on a toy that has some room on the bottom to put the motor and battery in and still allows the wheels turn freely. You will enjoy this battery powered car as much as your kids do.

Things You'll Need

  • 9 volt battery
  • Battery holder with switch
  • Soldering pen and solder
  • Pinion gear
  • Hub gear
  • Hot glue gun
  • 6 feet of twine

Instructions

  1. Making it go

    • 1

Remove the rear wheel and axle and take one of the wheels off.

    • 2

Slide the hub gear onto the axle with the teeth facing inward and replace all parts.

    • 3

Put the pinion gear onto the motor shaft. Position the motor on the underside of the car so the pinion gear meshes with the hub gear. Mark the spot with a marker.

    • 4

Attach the wires from the battery holder to the terminals on the hobby motor. A soldering pen works best for this.

    • 5

Glue the motor in the spot you marked earlier using the glue gun.

    • 6

Hot glue the battery holder to the underside of the car. The holder must be switch side down and the wires have to be clear of the motor and wheels.

    • 7

Install the battery and close the lid. Turn the switch to go and the car should run.

    • 8

Tie the twine to the front bumper to guide the car.
