How to Replace RC Car Tires

RC cars, trucks and other vehicles are capable of lightning fast speeds of up to 80 mph. These cars run through tires fairly quickly if you're racing, and even weekend hobbyists will find that the tires need changing every now and then. It's easy to replace RC car tires if you know the type and style.

Things You'll Need

  • New tires

Instructions

Determine the type of tires you're currently running on your vehicle and decide if that's the same type you want to run in the future. RC car tires come in five varieties: drift, bowtie, ribbed, all-terrain and street. Drift tires are used for racing, bowtie are used for tracks, ribbed have more grip for softer conditions, all-terrain work on all surfaces and street tires are used only on paved surfaces.

Turn the RC car over on one side and place it on a flat surface to give you a better working area. Take off the factory nuts by using a 4-way wrench and remove the old tires. Keep the nuts in your pocket or another safe place where you won't lose them.

    • 3

Position the new tires into place on the car, making sure the directional treads face the right direction and point toward the front of the car. Also, make sure that you place the wider tires on the back of the car and the thinner ones on the front of the car.

Apply a thin coat of glue to the tire and position the rim onto the tire. Most beginners don't realize that RC car tires are glued into place, but this is the only way to keep the tire and rim connected during even routine runs. Place a rubber band around the tire and rim and leave it in place until the glue dries. This helps set the rim and prevents it from falling off.

Turn the car over after you've replaced both tires on the one side and the glue dries. Remove the rubber band and repeat the steps on the other side. Once the glue dries and you've taken off the rubber bands, the RC car is ready to run.
