Train Table Plans

A train table is an essential for any model train set. The train table supports the set at a comfortable height for user enjoyment. It also provides a setting for train accessories like model stations, houses and trees. The model train enthusiast may set up any design of track, and attach all necessary electrical components. Controls, too, are easily accessible.
  1. Designing the Table

    • Design the train table so that it is large enough to accommodate a full layout of tracks. A set might be small at the moment, but it can certainly grow. A size of 56 inches long by 42 inches wide will accommodate reasonable growth in track and will be wide enough to manage from a standing position. Use sturdy 2 x 4s for the legs. Adults will prefer a table of standard height with 30 inch legs. If designing a train table for young children, make the 2 x 4s 16 or 24 inches high. Cut two more 2 x 4s to a length of 48 inches each, and another two 2 x 4s to length of 36 inches. These four 2 x 4s will form the frame of the table. Cut a piece of 3/4 inch plywood 56 x 42 inches for the table top.

    Building the Table

    • Use wood screws to attach one of the 36 inch 2 x 4s perpendicular to the upper part of one of the table legs. The 4 inch width of the 36 inch 2 x 4 should be parallel to the height of the leg. The top of the 36 inch 2 x 4 should also be flush with the top of the leg. When you are finished, you should have something that looks like an "L." Attach another leg to the other side of the 36 inch 2 x 4, so you get something that looks like a large bracket. This is a side of the train table. Make the other side of the table in exactly the same way.

Connect the two sides of the table together with the 48 inch 2 x 4s. Each 48 inch 2 x 4 will connect the top of one side of the table to the exact opposite point on the other side of the table. The completed frame should look like a table without a top, or an oversized wooden bed frame. Place the plywood on top of the frame. Use wood glue to secure it in place. Sand the train table to remove any rough spots. Stain the table to protect the wood and also to create a smooth surface. Special stains may be applied to create effects of color or grain.

Arranging the Tracks and Creating a Fantasy Locale

    • Arrange the train tracks on the table top. Use small tacks to secure the tracks in position. Place equipment and controls conveniently around the table. Glue buildings in appropriate positions and finish with appropriate landscaping elements. With a little imagination, a train table can be turned into a fantasy locale. Apply paint to create the effect of large expanses of green or areas of water. Complete the design with miniature figures of people and animals.
