How to Make a Remote-Controlled Car Go Faster

Although remote-controlled cars often are seen as just kids' toys, many enthusiasts take great pride in building the best remote-control cars possible. Speed is one of the factors that determines the quality of the car, so those who build cars for racing or contests do all they can to get their car to go faster. The steps below show you a few options to push the limits on your RC car's speedometer.

Instructions

  1. Engine/Motor Solutions

    • 1

Switch lubricants. Heavier greases such as those often recommended for use actually can clog up your engine and decrease performance speed. Instead of a heavy oil or grease, use WD40 or a similar product, which is much lighter. Be aware, however, that a lighter lubrication may make the gears wear out a bit more quickly.

    • 2

Break in the motor slowly, running it at lower speeds for a few hours before you speed up. The purpose of this is to gradually wear down the brushes so that their shape conforms more to the shape of the commutator.

    • 3

Adjust your car's carburetor to the lowest setting you can. You should set it just above the point where the car would stall. The lower the carburetor setting, the better the odds are of keeping the fuel-to-air ratio low. A ratio that is too high can bog down or flood the engine.

    • 4

Get a pinion on the motor that has more teeth. This will affect the power that is provided to the drive train.

    Other Fixes

    • 5

Check all gears and moving parts for areas of friction, including axles. Any friction will slow the car down because it will take more energy for the car to overcome the friction force and move the part.

    • 6

Try a different battery pack or higher voltage. The type of battery can make a difference in the power. If you increase the voltage, make sure it isn't so high that the excess energy would damage your wiring.

    • 7

Lighten the body of the car as a last resort. The lighter the body, the less weight the engine has to move and the faster the car will go.
