How to Build an Off-Road Track for RC Cars

Building an off-road track for RC cars provides hours of fun and requires very few tools and supplies. With a few basic hand tools and a little time, a relatively small patch of open soil can be turned into an off-road race track complete with berms, jumps and obstacles. As builder of the track you can custom design the course adding straightaways for high speeds, tight corners and special sections with sand, rocks or other debris. The course can be designed for any level of skill or a combination of easy to intermediate and expert sections.

Things You'll Need

  • Patch of dirt land 20 feet by 20 feet
  • Wood stakes 1 inch by 1 inch by 12 inches
  • Rope 1/2 inch in diameter
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a square patch of land at least 400 sq. feet by removing any grass, weeds or debris that may be on the land so that only the dirt remains. The track will be formed using the dirt as the roadway, so plant material and debris must be cleared away to expose the dirt.

    • 2

Place stakes into the soil in the shape of an oval in the middle of the rectangular patch of dirt. The oval should be approximately 10 feet long and will serve as the middle barrier of the track around which the RC cars will race, as an oval NASCAR race track is shaped but on dirt.

    • 3

Wind the rope around the stakes to make the oval barrier and form the center of the track. Using a shovel, fill the oval area within the stakes with dirt or rocks to form a solid barrier.

    • 4

Shovel dirt around the perimeter of the entire track to create a slanted outside edge to the track, forming a berm. Use dirt that is not formed into large clods so that the sloping berm will be smooth and form an even outside edge to the track that RC cars can run on.

    • 5

Shovel dirt in a uniform pile across the track. Pile the dirt from the outside edge of the track to the inside oval barrier. Pile and pack as much dirt as necessary to form a jump for the RC cars. Form the runway up to the jump smoothly so that the RC car speeds up and off of the lip of the jump.
