How to Set Up an Electric Helicopter for Its First Flight

You have completed the simulators. You've gotten the confidence with the RC helicopter controls. You're itching to go out into an open field and take your new RC helicopter out on its first flight. Unless you are an advanced pilot or have a lot of money to spend on replacements, it is a good idea to install helicopter training gear before flying a new RC helicopter for the first time.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 skid clips
  • 4 training gear bars with balls on the end
  • Center hub
  • Super glue
  • Basic tools

Instructions

  1. Prepare RC Helicopter

    • 1

Remove the helicopter from its base. This will give you a clearer picture of where the gear bars need to be inserted.

    • 2

Put the skid clips on each strut. The clips will be placed where the struts coming down from the helicopter meet the skids.

    • 3

Place the center hub between the two helicopter skids. The hub must be placed right side up, or you will not be able to attach the training gears to the helicopter properly. The training gear bars are placed through the holes in the skid clips.

    • 4

Place the helicopter back on its base. Your brand-new mini RC helicopter is now ready for its first flight. Take it up into the air and get a feel for the controls.

    • 5

After you are comfortable with the controls, remove the training gear and try flying the helicopter without it. It should be far more responsive than it was during its first flight. If you choose, you can leave the training gear on for a few more initial flights until you have mastered flying the helicopter.
