How to Build RC Airplanes

Until recently, RC (radio-controlled) airplanes were not sold in ready-to-fly form. As a result, many RC airplane purists prefer to build their own RC planes. Though it can be challenging to assemble the hundreds of constituent parts into a machine that actually flies, those who practice the art say it brings them a much greater sense of satisfaction.

Things You'll Need

  • RC airplane (unassembled)
  • Screwdriver with the appropriate head(s)
  • Pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Cutting knife
  • Sandpaper and sanding blocks (recommended for wooden RC airplanes)
  • Saw
  • Industrial-strength glue
  • Wire-strippers (recommended for RC airplanes with electric motors)

Instructions

  1. Assemble an RC Airplane

    • 1

Read the instruction manual very carefully. Pay particularly close attention to the steps involved in assembling mechanized parts. Make sure you have a comprehensive understanding of everything involved. If you have questions before you begin, consult the staff at the store where you purchased the RC airplane kit, or call the manufacturer.

    • 2

Collect all the necessary parts and group them together according to type (such as screws or windows) or according to function (such as parts needed to assemble wings or landing gear). Store them in small boxes or a tray as you build to ensure they don't get misplaced.

    • 3

Work slowly, and follow the steps in your instruction manual to the letter. Consult diagrams to make sure that what you've built so far looks the way it ought to. Make absolutely certain you have completed each step properly and completely before moving on to the next.

    • 4

Sand away any loose chips if your RC airplane is made of wood. You should complete this step as you build to minimize the risk of getting a sliver as you continue your assembly.

    • 5

Choose and apply an attractive finish covering. These can be made of tissue, silk, fiberglass or plastic. Remember that you are not necessarily bound to use any coverings included in your RC airplane kit, as they can be customized for a relatively inexpensive cost.

    • 6

Paint your RC airplane using an airbrush. This is easier and works better with the materials used in the finish coverings than brush-applied paints.
