Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline of a horse's head beginning from its neck on a piece of 1/4-inch thick plywood according to the size and pose you like. Cut out the outline of the plywood with a jigsaw, then smooth the edges with sandpaper.

    • 2

Glue Popsicle (or craft) sticks around all edges of the head, but do not leave any gaps between the sticks. Cut the sticks with utility scissors if you need shorter pieces. Attach sticks along the outline forming the jaws to make the jaws easily recognizable.

    • 3

Glue Popsicle sticks onto all areas inside the outline, but attach all sticks onto the cardboard vertically. Cut the sticks into smaller pieces to fit tight spaces and avoid leaving any gaps between sticks.

    • 4

Draw the outline of the eyes, nose and mouth of the horse on the surface of the sticks. Cut the sticks into smaller pieces according to the shape of the eyes, nose and mouth of the horse, then glue the pieces onto the face of the horse.

    • 5

Cut the sticks in half lengthwise, then glue the cut pieces along the back of the neck to show its mane. Allow the glue to dry overnight, then apply oil-based wood stain over the entire head with a paint brush to give the sticks a natural look.

Apply enamel paint along the mouth, eyes and nose with a paint brush to provide more detail. Apply a different color of stain on the sticks that represent the horse's mane and allow the stain to dry.
