How to Build an Arch With Blocks

If you want to build a roof, doorway or window without using beams or long blocks, you can build an arch. In architecture, archways are constructed using many small stones or clay blocks to form a curving roof with the weight of the blocks holding the arch up. This is often less expensive than using larger beams. You can practice building arches using a set of wooden arch-building blocks. This is a fun and inexpensive activity for young children interested in building and architecture.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a set of wooden arch-building blocks. Most sets can be found at your local toy store. You can also practice building arches with Legos or cut your own blocks from wood.

    • 2

Lay a piece of cardboard or large flat block of wood down on the ground. Construct your arch out of smaller blocks by laying them horizontally on the board. Use a trapezoidal block for your keystone, the middle stone on which the weight of the other stones rests.

    • 3

Lift the cardboard from the ground slowly, holding only the top edge and keeping the bottom edge in contact with the ground. The arch should hold together as if is being tilted. Try to get the arch to hold until it is in a fully upright position.
