How to Make Number Blocks

Number blocks are a learning tool, but they also provide hours of fun. During your baby's early years, he can practice hand-eye coordination by stacking and arranging the collection of blocks. As your child grows, the numbers on the blocks will encourage him to count and practice simple arithmetic. Making homemade number blocks is a thoughtful way to give your child an educational toy.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the corners and edges of the blocks with the fine sandpaper, making sure all of the edges are smooth. You can use any size block you prefer, selecting blocks that suit your child's needs. Many craft stores sell pre-cut cubes and you can also get cubes cut at lumber stores.

    • 2

Cut two copies of the digits 1 through 9 and 0 out of the fabric, using as many different patterns and colors as you can find.

    • 3

Wrap the blocks completely in scraps of fabric, gluing the fabric securely to the wood. Use different patterns and colors to give the blocks a unique look, or you can select fabric that complements the decor of your nursery. Different fabrics will allow your child to feel different textures during early development.

    • 4

Glue one set of numbers on opposite sides of a block; repeat with the remaining numbers and blocks.

    • 5

Glue additional trim or fabric scraps to the blocks, if you want. Make sure you are happy with the look and that all of the items are glued securely. Allow the glue to dry for about 24 hours before giving them to your baby.
