Things You'll Need
Instructions
Wear a pair of gloves when wielding a wooden sword to minimize the chance of splinters from the wood getting into the skin on your hands or arms. If you purchase or create your own sword, the hilt, or handle, should be sanded and smoothed down; however, gloves are a wise precaution, especially in the event that the sword breaks and splinters into pieces.
Find a sword that is the right weight and well balanced when you hold it in your hand, this will make it easier to swing the sword comfortably.
Use your wooden sword only when you are in an open space. A sword made from wood is much more brittle and breakable than its metal counterpart, so the odds are higher that a piece will break off and go flying
Swing and jab your sword like you would a metal version of the weapon. A wooden sword will have a different feel, but the purpose of the replica is to serve as a replacement.
Exercise caution when using the swords to play fight with others. The sturdy wood can still cause injury upon contact, so consider adding a layer of foam or padding on top of the wood if you are engaging in a mock fight with heavy contact.
Keep the tip of the sword down when it is not in use to prevent accidental injury. Even though the sword is not as sharp as metal, it can still be dangerous, and it is important to always practice safety when working with weapons.
