How to Learn With Wooden Blocks

Wooden blocks may seem old-fashioned when compared to more modern toys, but when used with a purpose, they can help a child develop many necessary skills. Playing with blocks helps a young child develop spatial reasoning and other math skills. Blocks can even aid in learning numbers and the alphabet. So put away some of those modern toys and go for the classic wooden blocks to help your child learn new skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Help children learn the alphabet with wooden blocks. Many blocks have the ABC's on them. Children are able to use them to put the letters in alphabetical order.

    • 2

Use wooden blocks to teach number recognition. Some wooden blocks come with numbers printed on them along with a number of objects that match that number. Children can also practice counting using the blocks.

    • 3

Challenge students to be creative with wooden blocks. By building with blocks, children learn how to construct structures that don't topple over, which contributes to spatial reasoning.

    • 4

Develop fine motor skills in children by having them build and manipulate block structures.
