Natural Ways to Polish Wood Toys

A good wooden toy made with quality handiwork has a pleasing look and feel and will provide years of joy to a child if you preserve it well. Wood can wear down if not treated in the right manner, so it's a good idea to use a few natural polishes to keep the toys looking clean and brand new.
  1. Soap and Water

    • Keep it simple by mixing together a solution of soap and water. Carefully rub the solution on the toys with a cloth to remove any excess dirt, and try to get every bit of the surface to keep the toy free of germs. You can also use vinegar, which is a mild disinfectant. Don't use bleach or detergents. Once you have rubbed it down, use a damp cloth or soft brush to wipe it clean. Don't submerge it in water.

    Mineral Oil or Beeswax

    • Use a natural oil or wax to prevent the wood from drying out. Oil can help replenish the natural moisture in the wood as opposed to harsh chemicals, which may cause the wood to warp or crack. A plain mineral oil is good to rub over the toy, or you can use a beeswax polish; these are good, nontoxic options that won't harm children. They also make the toy smell nice. Once you have applied a thin layer of oil, wipe off any excess oil and allow the layer to seep into the wood.

    Vinegar and Oil

    • Combine vinegar and oil to make your own furniture polish. Use about 1/4 cup of vinegar for every few drops of oil, and use a clean cloth to apply it to the wood. Olive oil is a good choice for the oil, or liquid wax jojoba, which doesn't go rancid. Linseed oil may dry out the wood.

    Lemons

    • A fourth way is to make a wood polish using lemons. You'll need one lemon, 1 tsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of water. You will need to squeeze the juice from the lemon and then combine it with the oil and water. Apply a thin coat to the toy's surface and let it sit for a few minutes. A soft cloth is good for buffing it to create a nice shine.
