How to Make Mini Furniture Out of Pine Cones, Sticks and Moss

Whether you're a lover of all things miniature or you have a little one in your life who needs furniture for a dollhouse, it's possible to make mini furniture out of items you find outside. Sticks transform into "wood" for chairs and beds, which can then be decorated with moss and pine cones. Because the imaginary fairies and little dolls that may use the furniture won't be very heavy, you won't have to worry about safety with mini furniture.

Things You'll Need

  • Lopper
  • Sticks 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter
  • Measuring tape
  • Pruner or hand saw
  • Wood glue
  • Small nails
  • Moss
  • Pine cones
  • Drill with 1/2-inch bit

Instructions

  1. Table

    • 1

Cut a series of sticks into the length of a mini table. The miniature table can be whatever length you desire, but 3 to 4 inches probably is adequate. Measure each stick to the right length, mark it with a pencil and cut the piece with a small hand saw.

    • 2

Glue four or five pieces next to each other so their long edges line up. Allow to dry.

    • 3

Add another layer of four or five sticks on top and glue them to the bottom pieces and to each other. When that's dry, add one more layer. When you're done, you'll have a square or rectangle table with circle ends showing on two sides.

    • 4

Glue moss on the top of the table as a tablecloth.

    Chair

    • 5

Cut eight sticks to 2 1/2 inches long, one stick 2 inches long and two sticks 5 inches long using a small hand saw.

    • 6

Nail together four 2 1/2-inch pieces to create a square. This will be the front portion of the chair, where a doll's legs rest against.

    • 7

Nail four pieces of equal length -- again about 2 1/2 inches -- to the back of that square so the new pieces jut perpendicularly from the original square.

    • 8

Nail two 5-inch sticks perpendicular to those pieces to create the back of the chair, adding a piece between the two long sticks for added strength.

    • 9

Curl and nail a long twig around the back of the chair to create a grand "princess" back.

    • 10

Nail two more small twigs onto the seat to create a base for the dolls to sit on. Cover the seat with a bit of glued-on moss to create a cushion.

    Pine Cone Lamps

    • 11

Cut a 1-inch-thick disc from a 1-inch stick using the hand saw. Cut another 1/2-inch-thick piece of wood to 3 inches long.

    • 12

Drill a 1/2-inch hole into the disc.

    • 13

Glue the 1/2-inch wide, 3-inch stick into the 1/2-inch drilled hole.

    • 14

Glue a pine cone to the top of the stick, with the flat bottom on the bottom.
