How to Build Wooden Toys for Kids

Building wooden toys for your kids can give them hours of enjoyment and be passed down for many generations. You also have the freedom to personalize the toys or even make a family project out of building them. You can allow your kids to choose what styles, shapes and colors they prefer. Wooden building blocks and memory tiles allow you to create a simple toy for your kids even if you are a woodworking novice.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Shape stencil
  • Untreated scrap wood, 1/2 and 2 inches thick
  • Protective gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Hand saw
  • Electric sander
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint brush

Instructions

  1. Make Building Blocks

    • 1

      Trace the stencil shapes you will be using onto the 2-inch-thick scrap wood.

      Put your protective gloves and eye wear on. Cut each shape from the scrap wood using the hand saw.

      Smooth and round out all edges of your blocks using the electric sander. Use the sandpaper to give it a smooth finish.

      Paint your blocks various colors and allow them to dry.

    Make Memory Tiles

      Trace 20 equal sized squares from your stencil onto the 1/2-inch-thick scrap wood.

      Put your protective gloves and eye wear on. Cut the squares using your hand saw.

      Smooth and round out all edges of your blocks using the electric sander. Use the sandpaper to give it a smooth finish.

      Draw 10 pair of various shapes and animals onto the squares.

    • 9

      Paint the squares various colors and allow them to dry.
