How to Make a Toy Car From Scratch

If you want your children to know the benefits of recycling, it helps to start young. One way to teach this value is to show them how to make items they like using recycled materials. Using a small juice box like the ones your kids carry in their lunches, you can make a toy car that actually drives and carries a small action figure.

Things You'll Need

  • Small juice box
  • Permanent marker
  • 20d nail
  • 2 medium drinking straws
  • Scissors
  • 4 plastic water bottle lids
  • Box cutter
  • Toy action figure

Instructions

    • 1

Lay an empty juice box on its side so that it resembles the body of a car. Use a permanent marker to draw a dot 3/4 inch from each end of the body, on either side. The result should be four dots positioned where the wheels would go on a car.

    • 2

Poke through the dots with a 20d nail. Stick a medium drinking straw through each set of holes to form the axes of the car. Center each axis within the body and use scissors to cut each axis until only 1/4 inch remains on either side.

    • 3

Apply hot glue to one end of an axis. Center the underside of a plastic water bottle lid over the glued axis and press it gently to seal it. Do this to the remaining three ends of the axes to apply all four wheels.

    • 4

Use a box cutter to cut three sides of a rectangle on the top of the car, near the front end. Place the uncut side of the rectangle at the front of the car. Fold the flap open to form a windshield.

    • 5

Place a small action figure in the car as a passenger. Take him for a ride!
