Types of Wooden Puzzle Boxes

People use wooden puzzle boxes to cure boredom or challenge their minds. There's a trick to opening these boxes correctly and, when opened, people can store jewelry or trinkets inside. A lining keeps their belongings safe and free of scratches. Most of these handcrafted wooden boxes come from other countries. One popular version is from Japan. There are several types of puzzle boxes that can fit all ages, personalities and skill levels.

Costa Rican and Vietnamese Puzzle Boxes
- You will find felt linings inside these puzzle boxes. They're typically crafted into hearts, musical symbols or animals. These boxes are easy to open, which means that both adults and children can use them. The puzzles from Costa Rica include purple heart, ironwood and monkey wood boxes. Those from Vietnam are made out of rosewood with glossy finishes. Some are decorated with shells and colored wood trim.
Japanese Puzzle Boxes
- These puzzle boxes are made of a variety of woods, textures and colors that form mosaic pictures or drawings. Open these boxes by sliding a series of concealed panels. Some are fairly simple, with only seven panels to open, while others have as many as 78 panels. They range widely in size.
Turkish Puzzle Boxes
- The key is part of the puzzle to this wooden box. You must locate it before you can open the box. Once you find it, you have to find the lock. Most Turkish wooden boxes are made of walnut or juniper and have up to five locks. There is also a choice of traditional, eagle or dragon lids. The insides are lined with fabric.
Polish Puzzle Boxes
- These are the simplest boxes to open, requiring just two or three moves, according to the Pandora's Puzzle Boxes web site. They are made of linden wood and come in hand-stained or hand-painted designs.
