How to Make a Simple Sling Shot

A sling shot is a handheld catapult made from wood, rubber bands and tape. Usually associated with the fictional character Dennis the Menace, it is easy to forget sling shots are useful hunting weapons. According to the Outdoors website, small game, like rabbits and pheasants, are easy to kill with sling shots because these animals "hold tight and will allow a sling shot hunter to get within several feet allowing for an excellent shot." With a little time, supplies and practice, you can make a sling shot and learn how to use it before your next hunting expedition.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a Y-shaped piece of wood that is about 8 inches long and 1 inch thick. It should have no cracks.

    • 2

Peel all of the bark off the wood and wrap the handle with duct tape to make it easier to hold.

    • 3

Cut a long, thick rubber band into even halves to create a firing mechanism.

    • 4

Put two 4-inch-long strips of duct tape together, sticky side to sticky side. This is your pocket that will hold ammunition.

    • 5

Put one vertical slit a half inch in from the edge of both sides of the duct-tape pocket.

    • 6

Push one half of the cut rubber band through the slit and fold it back on itself. Loop a small rubber band around it to hold it in place. Repeat with the other half of the rubber band on the other side of the pocket.

    • 7

Secure the open ends of one of the rubber band halves to the tip of one side of the Y-shaped wood with duct tape. Repeat the process on the other side.
