How to Make Money at Home Painting Toys

Many people dream about staying home and making money from their passion--whatever that may be. If you have a goal of staying home to paint toys, you'll need to learn to streamline your services, build a client base and keep records of your services so you can improve your productivity and your ability to serve your clients.

Instructions

    • 1

Start buying your supplies wholesale. Search for online dealers and suppliers. Buy paint and toys in bulk. Ask for samples before buying new products, whenever possible, to test the quality of the product before committing to a large order.

    • 2

Consult with a CPA about your business. You may need to register a business name, get liability insurance and pay taxes for your sales. If you plan to write off your business expenses, you will need to keep meticulous records and receipts.

    • 3

Set up an online store or business. Websites like Etsy.com, Amazon.com and Ebay.com are all venues through which you can sell your products. With an online presence, you'll have little need for a physical store to sell your goods. You may want to set up a personal website and online store, with an online ordering system. Your customers can pay using their credit cards through Paypal.

    • 4

Make business cards with your web address(es) and contact information. Your business cards should feature your name, what you do, and possibly a logo or photograph of a presentable finished piece.

    • 5

Get a phone line in your home--or even just a cell phone--specifically for your business.

    • 6

Visit local toy stores for ideas and to build a client base. Introduce yourself to the managers of these stores. Network yourself and your products. Bring samples of your work (and business cards) wherever you go.

    • 7

Set up a room in your home where you can store the toys and paints. If possible, make this a room in your home where you can work away from family and distractions. Put up a sign on your door when you're working, indicating that you need privacy.

    • 8

Set aside a certain number of hours every day for working, and commit to working those hours. Schedule breaks and lunch periods. Keep track of your work time in a spreadsheet, where you can also calculate sales, income and expenditures. This will help you figure out if you're making money.

    • 9

Start a log of clients, and contact them regularly. The appeal of a home-based business such as yours is that it's personal. Your clients will want to buy from you because they know you and they trust the quality of your work.
