Things You'll Need
Instructions
Purchase all plywood ready cut or cut from 4 feet by 8 feet sheets of 3/8 inch thick unfinished plywood. Sand all pieces using coarse to fine sanding belts. Leave extra fine sanding for the final step. If you wish to paint your toy kitchen, paint all sides using your desired paint color. Allow to dry 24 to 36 hours before proceeding.
Make all four appliances 24 inches by 18 inches by 12 inches. The refrigerator and storage cupboard will stand on their short end when completed. The sink and stove will lay on their long side.
Assemble the basic box for all four pieces, except for the fronts of each appliance. For each box, you will need two 12 inch by 18 inch pieces for the short ends, two 12 inch by 24 inch side pieces, and one 24 inch by 18 inch back. Nail box sides together first, squaring the corners and making sure that the box dimensions remain 18 inches by 24 inches. Do not place one set of boards inside the other to nail them, or the box will be an extra 1/4 inch wide or long, and the back will not fit flush on all four edges. Secure all pieces, including the back, with 3/4 inch finishing nails.
Take the four pieces of 17 1/4 by 11 1/4 inch plywood and attach 2 wall mounts along the short sides, one inch from each end, using 3/4 inch sheetrock screws. These will be your shelves for the refrigerator and the upright storage cupboard. Decide where you want to place your shelves and then attach to inside of refrigerator box and storage cabinet box using 3/4 inch sheetrock screws.
Fold piano hinge along its spine. Use silicone caulk to temporarily tack it in place along right or left side of refrigerator front, depending which way you want the door to open. Use 3/4 inch sheetrock screws to attach piano hinge along the front edge of the door so that hinge works correctly. Open and close door several times and adjust hinge placement if needed until door opens smoothly. Repeat Step Four for the storage cabinet door.
For the stove door, lay door flat, long side butted against the front edge of the stove. Cut 3/4 inch from piano hinge. Lay piano hinge flat, spine up, along the joint between the stove box and stove door. Tack in place with silicone adhesive, then screw into place using 3/4 inch sheetrock screws. Test door to make sure it opens and closes correctly. Adjust hinge placement if necessary. Cut two circles of black felt for stove burners and glue them to the stove top using instant adhesive.
Attach the 12 inch by 18 inch doors to your toy sink using 3/4 inch sheetrock screws and cabinet butt hinges. Scribe two 6 inch diameter circles on the sink top, side by side. Use power drill and 1/2 inch bit to make a pilot hole somewhere within the circle. Insert jig saw blade in hole and cut out the circles you scribed, just inside the lines. Gently sand the edges to remove any burrs.
Lay a bead of clear silicone caulk around each circle's edge. Place a metal salad bowl in each hole and press down to ensure a good seal. Smooth silicone caulk and wipe away any smears. Allow to dry overnight. Drill a 1/2 inch hole near the edge of each bowl and insert a j-hook bolt upside down so that it looks like a faucet.
Attach all remaining door knobs, door handles and oven knobs. The two patio door handles are for the refrigerator and the upright storage cupboard doors. Sand all sharp corners with extra fine sandpaper to bevel the edges.
