"Aero Fighters"
"Aero Fighters," known as "Sonic Wings" in Japan, is a vertical scrolling shooter, more commonly referred to as a "shmup." Released in 1992 for arcades, it was ported to the Super Nintendo in 1994 in the United States. In "Aero Fighters," you control one of eight planes in an attempt to defeat all of the enemies on a stage without getting destroyed yourself. As it takes only one hit to destroy your plane, "Aero Fighters" can be considered quite difficult; the screen is frequently filled with enemy ships and bullets. The game was released in limited quantities, making it a collector's item; it usually commands a high price on the secondary market when it appears.
Cheats
There are two cheats available for "Aero Fighters," consisting of a bonus game mode and a hidden plane. Both codes can only be entered on the "Player Select" screen and require two controllers to activate. For the "Endurance Mode" cheat, hold the "R" button on the first controller. Press "A," "Left," "Y," "Right," "X," "Down," "B," and "Up" on the second controller. If entered correctly, "Endurance Mode" will begin. To play as the hidden plane Rabio, hold the "R" button on the first controller and press "Left," "Down," "Right," "X," "Y," "A," "B," "Left," "Down," "Right," "Down," "X," "Y," "A," and "B" on the second controller. If entered correctly, Rabio will be automatically selected once you have finished inputting the code.
Endurance Mode
"Endurance Mode" allows you to fight against each of the game's bosses. You do not need to play through each stage in the game; you only fight the bosses one after the other in succession. There are seven bosses total that you must fight. In addition, you are only given one credit, which is three lives counting your current one, to defeat all seven bosses. Once you have lost all three lives, the game is over and you must start again from the beginning.
Rabio
Rabio is a guest character, hailing from the game "Rabio Lupus" -- or "Rabbit Punch," as it is known outside of Japan. Rabio is not a plane but rather an anthropomorphic flying rabbit. He is smaller than the other planes, allowing him to avoid damage more easily. Rabio's primary weapon is a bullet that travels directly in front of him. His secondary weapon is two small green balls of light that attach to an enemy, causing constant damage. Rabio's bomb allows him to turn invincible for a few seconds while he sends out ghost-like apparitions of himself across the screen, damaging all enemies they touch.
