How to Use the Vice C64 Emulator

The Commodore 64 is a home computer developed by Commodore International, released in 1982. In addition to basic word processing and database software, it also plays games from 5.25" floppy disks. The Versatile Commodore Emulator (VICE) runs various disk programs for the various Commodore computer systems, including the C64 and the Vic-20. The emulation process is essentially the same for the various supported computers, auto-detecting the initialization process for each ROM.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and extract the WinVICE zip file to a directory of your choice. The VICE emulator doesn't have an installation process and is just the executable file. Double-click this file to start the emulator.

    • 2

Open the "Options" menu, then configure video resolution, audio output and joystick mapping from the default settings. Click the "Settings" menu, then select the "Save Settings" option to save the options you've just configured. Make sure that you do not change any other settings other than these basic I/O settings.

    • 3

Click the "File" menu, then select the "Autostart disk/image" option. In the next dialog, select a C64 ROM, with the .c64 file extension. This option is called "autostart" because it automatically types in the standard Commodore 64 program initialization line, usually, "LOAD "*",8,1."
