Blue Magic Guide for Final Fantasy V

The Super Nintendo role-playing game "Final Fantasy V" features a job system, which allows the game's four characters to learn a variety of skills at the player's discretion. One of these job classes is Blue Mage, which is a special type of wizard who learns magic spells from enemies and can cast those spells once learned; spells appropriated from enemies are referred to collectively as Blue Magic. Any character can be a Blue Mage, and once players have a Blue Mage in their party, they can hunt for an enemy that will give their Blue Mage the abilities they wish to use in the game.
  1. Learning Blue Magic

    • To gain a Blue Magic spell from an enemy, that enemy must inflict said spell on the Blue Mage. This will then cause the Blue Mage to learn the spell. While obtaining attack spells are simply a matter of waiting for the enemy to cast them, other types of spells require additional steps. For example, an enemy wouldn't normally cast the party-healing White Wind on your party. The player would first have to cast Confuse to make the enemy unable to discern friend or foe. Alternatively, using a character with Beastmaster job class abilities to cast Control on an enemy allows the player to make that enemy use its abilities against its will.

    Attack Spells

    • Of the 30 Blue Magic spells in "Final Fantasy V," 26 are attack spells. These attack spells run the gamut of possible effects. Some are elemental spells, as in the case of the wind-elemental attack Aero or the fire-based Burn Ray, and can deal additional damage to enemies with weaknesses to a specific element. Select spells only affect enemies of a certain level. For example, Level 3 Flare casts the Flare attack on every enemy with a difficulty level of 3 or a multiple of 3. Other spells don't take away the enemy's health, but instead affect the enemy's status, such as Flash, which inflicts the Blind status on enemies.

    Support Spells

    • While most of the Blue Magic spells are damage-inflicting spells, four of them are actually support spells used to heal or otherwise positively affect the status of the caster or other party members. Three of them affect health points, or HP: Red Feast takes HP from enemies and gives them to the spell caster, Pep Up sacrifices the caster to heal another character's HP, and White Wind replenishes the entire party's HP in an amount equal to the caster's HP. Only one spell has various status effects on a party: Guardian casts Float, Protes and Shell on all of your characters, protecting the party from earth-based attacks, increasing defense, and decreasing magic damage, respectively.

    Azulmagia

    • Azulmagia, the boss of the N-Zone castle dungeon in ̶0;Final Fantasy V,̶1; uses Blue Magic spells to attack your party. Therefore, if your party's Blue Mages haven't learned some Blue Magic spells yet, they can learn 28 of the game's 30 Blue Magic abilities from this particular boss. The only two that players can't learn from Azulmagia are Moon Flute and Pep Up.
