What Is the Best Way to Avoid Ghosts in Pac-Man?

"Pac-Man" is one of the earliest hit video games, released in arcades in 1980. It has been ported to home consoles, portables and other computing devices since the Atari 2600 and is one of the highest-grossing games ever made. "Pac-Man" is an early example of video game "artificial intelligence," in which discernible enemies appear to have personalities and strategies based on patterns programmed into the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the personalities of the ghosts, and the order in which they exit the ghost house. This helps you prioritize threats by learning the patterns of the ghosts. For example, the red ghost, Blinky, is specifically designed to shadow Pac-Man around the maze, so going around short loops can help lose him or cause him to lag behind.

    • 2

Avoid the corners unless absolutely necessary. When ghosts go into "Scatter Mode" at random intervals, each one of them heads for a pre-determined route in one of the corners, so Pac-Man can get caught inadvertently by a ghost that might actually be heading away from Pac-Man.

    • 3

Induce "Frightened Mode" in the ghosts at regular intervals to reset their behavior temporarily. If you are being tailed by ghosts, eat as many as possible to send them back to the ghost house for a few seconds to allow you to clear out the dangerous corners of the map.
