How to Get Past the Never-Ending Stairs in Super Mario

Bowser's final barrier of protection in "Super Mario 64" is a set of magical never-ending stairs. To finish the game, it's imperative that Mario finds a way to the top of the castle. Purist gamers will want to accomplish this by collecting 70 of the 120 stars scattered throughout the castle and the 15 levels inside. The spell is broken with the power of 70 stars, at which point the staircase regains normality. However, if you want to get to the top sooner, exploit a well-known glitch -- the reverse long-jump, also known as the endless stairs glitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk through the door at the top of the castle, leading to the corridor with the never-ending stairs.

    • 2

Run up the stairs for five seconds. Turn Mario around, facing down the staircase.

    • 3

Perform a long-jump by pushing the joystick forward and pressing "Z" and "A" simultaneously on the Nintendo 64 game controller.

    • 4

Quickly pull the joystick back all the way as soon as Mario is off the ground, and hold the joystick in that position until you reach the top of the stairs.

    • 5

Hold down "Z" and tap "A" as fast as possible before Mario hits the ground after the initial long jump. Continue holding down "Z" and tapping "A" until Mario reaches the top of the stairs.
