How to Get All Chaos & Super Emeralds in Sonic & Knuckles

Imagine blasting through "Sonic and Knuckles" at an insane speed while being totally invulnerable to enemy attack. If you collect all the Chaos and Super Emeralds and link up your "Sonic and Knuckles" game with your copy of "Sonic 3," you can unlock special characters like Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles and Hyper Tails who boast a wide range of special abilities. To do so, you will have to collect a huge amount of rings and win various bonus stages to gather the 14 Chaos Emeralds, which you must then replace with Super Emeralds.

Instructions

- 1
  Earn 50 rings while playing "Sonic 3," and then jump and hit "UP" on the direction pad to transport Sonic to a special stage.

  Beat the special stage by dodging bombs and collecting the number of rings you see displayed onscreen. The number required varies from stage to stage.

  Repeat six times to earn seven Chaos Emeralds, and then create a save file.

  Place your "Sonic 3" cartridge inside your "Sonic and Knuckles" cartridge using the Sega Genesis' "Lock-in" device. Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 in "Sonic and Knuckles" to earn the other seven Chaos Emeralds.

  Travel to Mushroom Hill Zone, and run into the Super Rings you see glowing. This brings you to the Hidden Palace. Here, gather the shining blue orbs to change your Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds, and earn the ability to play "Sonic and Knuckles" with the Hyper versions of the characters.
