Prologue
Magnus Gallant, a new officer assigned to the Southern Division of the Kingdom, meets fellow officer Diomedes Rangue and advisor Hugo Miller, and they're sent off to deal with bandits at Theodricus Mine. Magnus is put in charge, which aggravates Dio, who challenges Magnus to a fight. Hugo breaks up the fight, and they go to the mine together. Upon defeating the bandits, Magnus discovers that the bandits were a diversion for a revolutionary army bent on assassinating Prince Yumil, an old friend of Magnus. Magnus rushes to rescue him and captures the rebel. When ordered to execute him by superior officer Rhade, he refuses. Then the rebel is rescued by his allies, and rebel activity intensifies.
Chapter 1
Magnus is sent to subdue the rebels by General Godeslas, and is introduced to Leia Silvis, another fellow officer. After completing more missions, including escorting Yumil and defeating Debonair of the Zenobians, Magnus begins to doubt the righteousness of his mission. He is then sent to capture the leader of the revolution, Frederick. However, upon capturing him, Magnus frees him instead of executing him and defects to the Revolutionary Army with Leia and Dio. Frederick gives him a post with the revolutionaries. Upon waging war against the Palatineans, he discovers that Godeslas is using cursed fruit of the netherworld to turn soldiers into monsters to defeat the rebels. Magnus defeats Godeslas and frees the southern region in the name of the revolution.
Chapter 2
Magnus and the Revolutionary Army march west to take on the Western division, confronting his father Ankiseth in the process. He also frees the Nirdamese people from their slavery to the Holy Lodis Empire. The Lodis Empire itself also enters the war against the Revolutionary Army. Finally, when assaulting Westinus, Magnus decides to attempt to make peace with the Western Division and his father, upon which Yumil is arrested for treason. Ankiseth and Magnus attempt to take him back but fail, and Ankiseth joins the Revolutionary Army.
Chapter 3
Due to their failures in suppressing the Revolutionary Army, Palatinus is stripped of its autonomy by the Holy Lodis Empire, to the consternation of King Procus and Prince Amirius. Magnus and the Revolutionary Army march east towards the Eastern Orthodox Church, discovering that due to an eastern soldier becoming corrupted by the Infernal Aura, the whole region was taken over by the Empire as well. Both the Palatineans and the Lodis forces, led by Baldwin Glendale, are attempting to find a source of ultimate power in the Temple of Berthe. Ultimately, however, it is Yumil, who was force-fed Fruit of the Netherworld, who finds it. He opens a gate into hell and summons demons to attack the land, proclaiming himself King of the Netherworld. Magnus fights to close the gate, but Yumil escapes.
Final Chapter
King Procus and Prince Amrius succumb to the Infernal Aura, and use that power to drive out the Lodis forces just as Magnus marches towards the capital. Defeating Amrius at Fort Romulus, Magnus meets Yumil again with the Knights of Danika, goddess of the netherworld. Defeating him at Winnea, Magnus discovers that Yumil is the Child of the Covenant, the price his ancestor paid for ultimate power. Magnus attempts to sway Yumil from the path of darkness, but before the prince can recant he is slain by Mari, his own servant. Magnus continues the fight against the demons and the Lodis Empire. They reach the ruins of Keryoleth, and Mari accidentally releases Danika from the seal and floods the region with dark power. Magnus manages to defeat Danika and close the gate to the netherworld.
Endings
Upon defeating Danika, the power of the underworld leaves her, and she thanks Magnus for freeing her and departs. Frederick is crowned as king and Magnus becomes known as his greatest general. Depending on how well you've done in the game, Magnus may become king as well when Frederick falls in battle against the eastern barbarians. If you've done poorly, however, Magnus is driven away and attacked by the Zenobians, and the kingdom falls without him.
