How to Get Past Death Mountain on Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Early on in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time," Death Mountain lives up to its name when Link is a child. As an active volcano, it constantly erupts, dropping deadly rocks onto you if you try to go up the mountain. At the summit of Death Mountain is a Great Faerie Fountain where you will receive magical power and the spin attack for the sword. Without this spin attack, you cannot progress through the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Kakariko Village Graveyard at night.

    • 2

Walk behind the second gravestone from the left and pull it backward to expose a secret chamber.

    • 3

Jump down and open the treasure chest to receive a Hylian Shield. As young Link, you are too small to use the shield for its intended purpose. Instead, the shield will cover your back like a turtle shell when you press the "R" button.

    • 4

Go to Death Mountain and start up the trail to the summit. When you come to the fork, Goron City is on the right and the trail to the summit is to the left. You should see the peak of the mountain with a crown of smoke around it.

    • 5

Watch the screen. When the screen starts turning red and shadows appear around you, volcanic rocks are about to fall. Press "R" to defend yourself with the Hylian Shield, and keep moving when you have the opportunity. If you time it right, you'll make it to the base of the wall without taking much damage.

    • 6

Defeat the Skulltulas climbing along the wall by shooting them with the Faerie Slingshot. Climb up; the owl Kaepora Gaebora will be waiting for you.
