How to Open Up an SNES Controller

If you're sitting at your Super Nintendo enjoying a few rounds of "Mortal Kombat" with your friends and suddenly lose the fight because your controller's buttons stop responding, your controller may have gotten dirt on the contacts, or buttons may have worn out. If you have any replacement components or just want to clean out the interior of the controller, you have to disassemble the controller and get to the motherboard and buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Super Nintendo, and unplug the controller from the console.

    • 2

Place the controller face-down on a flat surface.

    • 3

Insert the philips-head into the screw slots, and turn counterclockwise until they come out. Don't press too hard and turn, or you will strip the screws. There are five screws holding the two halves of the controller together. Place the screws in a safe location.

    • 4

Lift the back of the controller away, and set it aside.

    • 5

Unhook the rubber wire from around the support posts, and gently lift the main circuit board free. Avoid touching the contacts.
