The Places to Power Up Secret of Mana

The experience and level system in "Secret of Mana" involves more than just the standard character experience levels. You have Weapon Skills for each of the Mana Weapons and Magic Skill for each of the Mana Elemental Spirits. Different locations in the game lend themselves to boosting your characters' skills in one area or another. Where you pick to level up your characters depends on what you want to work on and the areas of the game you can access.
  1. Path to Gaia's Navel

    • The path to Gaia's Navel from Pandora gives you two endpoints to rest and restore energy. In the west, you can go into Kippo Village or head north to Gaia's Navel for more enemies, or you can head back east to Pandora. Gaia's Navel is accessible on foot from Potos, Pandora and the Water Palace, making it a prime location to level up when you start the game and can't travel via the Cannon Travel Center or fly anywhere with the flying dragon, Flammie. You also have plenty of room to maneuver so you don't get pinned in a corridor.

    Upper Land Forest

    • After you beat the Jabberwocky boss in the Water Palace, the Cannon Travel Center gives you access to the Upper Land Forest, home of Popoi/the Sprite. This is an ideal area to level up magic until -- and even after -- you gain Luna's "MP Absorb" spell for the Sprite. The springtime portion of the forest leads to the Wind Palace, where you can restore your HP and MP without having to stay at an inn.

    Lofty Mountains

    • After you gain control of Flammie, you can visit the Lofty Mountains in the southwestern part of the main continent, where the Palace of Darkness is located. Here, you can level up your party by traveling through the palace or by ascending the mountain to Sage Joch's cavern. The enemies here have more HP and give you more experience. However, the path through either location is a long, hard trek without ready access to HP/MP restoration so make sure you have plenty of magic and healing items. The town of Mandala is located nearby, so if you get in a tough spot, call Flammie and land in town. If you're in the Palace, use the Magic Rope to get to the exit and call Flammie.

    Pure Land

    • The Pure Land is the final area in the game before you can access the Mana Fortress and, as you would expect, the enemies here are extremely tough and can wipe out your whole party quickly. Killing enemies here will get you more experience than anywhere else in the game. If you're well-prepared, want quick levels and can access it, travel to the Pure Land in the northwest corner of the game map.
