Who Is Oni Link?

The "Legend of Zelda" series is a long-running action RPG video game series from Nintendo, spanning 15 entries over all of Nintendo's major consoles as of the date of publication. Central to each story is the player's character, Link. Over the years, Link has undergone a number of different forms that all harken back to the same basic design. Many of the games branch even further, offering multiple forms in one game. Oni Link is one such form, existing almost exclusively within "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask."
  1. Majora's Mask

    • "Majora's Mask" is the second Nintendo 64 entry in the series, and the sixth overall Zelda game. The game is set in the world of Termina. A Skull Kid has stolen Majora's Mask, a powerful relic that has given him the power to drag the moon down towards Termina. With only three days to save the world, Link ventures forth to reclaim the mask and stop the moon's landing. As the end of the three days draws near, Link has the ability to turn back time and repeat the three days. Also aiding Link in his adventures are several powerful masks.

    Mask Powers

    • One of the core elements in "Majora's Mask" is the use of various masks. These masks grant Link a number of powers that can be useful in solving puzzles or fighting foes. Many of these masks also grant Link additional forms, which can widely vary in appearance. For example, the Goron Mask gives Link the appearance of a Goron, a rotund mountain creature with incredible strength. Many masks are integral to solving key puzzles as part of the game's storyline, or to obtaining other items that are much rarer but not necessary to complete the game.

    Fierce Deity Mask

    • The Fierce Deity is one of the strongest masks in "Majora's Mask," granting Link the alternate "Fierce Deity" form. This mask can only be obtained by trading all 20 of the non-transformation masks to the four Lunar Children that wear the Boss Remains at the Moon. While not required to beat the game, this mask makes many boss battles significantly easier, with exception to a key few where boss mechanics trump the Fierce Deity form's abilities.

    Oni Link

    • Oni Link is the colloquial term applied to the Fierce Deity form of Link, commonly used within the Zelda fan community. The title is not official by any means, but has gained acceptance when referring to this form, especially in shorthand. Oni Link more closely resembles the adult Link from "Ocarina of Time," who otherwise does not make an appearance in "Majora's Mask." Oni Link sports white hair, face paint, white eyes devoid of pupils and pale blue clothing. His large two-handed sword precludes the use of shields, but offers immense physical damage and fires off ranged beam attacks against targeted enemies. Oni Link is limited to use only in boss battles, unless a glitch is employed. His massive stature makes exiting rooms difficult in glitched use, however.
