How to Kill the Ball Things on a Chain in Super Mario Bros 3

The "ball things on a chain," formally known as Chain Chomps, in "Super Mario Bros 3" are devious, animal-like balls tethered by a chain to a wooden block. Chain Chomps are armed with sharp teeth and they despise both Mario and Luigi. Unfortunately, the brothers cannot kill Chain Chomps by just jumping on them like they would a Goomba, Paragoomba or Koopa Troopa. Have no fear, however, because there are four other ways that you, as the controller of Mario and Luigi, can take out a Chain Chomp.

Instructions

- 1
  Collect a star to become invincible for approximately five seconds and run into the Chain Chomp to kill it. Stars can be found in almost every level of "Super Marios Bros 3." Jump over the star when you first find it and scout the area ahead before you collect the star so you know the exact path to take.

  Jump on a Koopa Troopa to make it retract into its shell, pick up the shell and then release it on a Chain Chomp to kill it. Scout the area ahead of the Koopa Troopa before you pick up its shell because it will come out of its shell and attack you if you do not release it fast enough.

  Don a Hammer Suit to turn into a Hammer Mario or Luigi and gain access to hammers. Approach the Chain Chomp and throw a hammer at it to kill it. Be careful because one hit from the Chain Chomp will take away the suit, as well as your ability to launch hammers.

  Put on a Tanooki Suit to turn into a Tanooki. Jump over the Chain Chomp and turn into a statue so you crash into the Chain Chomp and kill it. Be careful because one hit from the Chain Chomp will take away the suit, as well as your ability to turn to stone.
