What Does VGA 80 Mean?

Video game collectors can use the Video Game Authority, a division of the Collectible Game Authority, to grade the quality levels of used games they want to buy or sell. The Authority assigns a grade in three categories: gold, silver and bronze. They also assign a number and sometimes + to distinguish quality features. A video game with a VGA 80 grade falls within the silver category.
  1. VGA 80

    • Grades within the silver category include 75, 75+, 80, 80+ and 85, with VGA 80 being at the center of the grade. According to the VGA website, "An item which receives the grade of 80 represents a nice example with minor to moderate flaws apparent upon close inspection. As a generalization, the average item which has spent time on a store shelf being moved around prior to purchase, but has otherwise been handled with relative care over the years may score an 80."

    Gold Level

    • Grades within the gold category include 85+, 90, 90+, 95, 95+ and 100. Very few games receive a gold rating and can only have subtle flaws barely visible to the naked eye. Items in this category can also be described as Gem Mint for 100, Mint for 95 and 95+ and Near Mint for 90+, 90 and 85+. Collectors can submit games to be graded for a fee as long as they have not been altered, repaired or restored.

    Bronze Level

    • Grades within the bronze category include 70 for excellent +, 60 for excellent, 50 for very good, 40 for good, 30 for fair, 20 for poor and 10 for very poor. The bronze category contains the highest number of games graded and can include damage from simply noticeable to extensive. Packaging can be torn or broken, discolored or have parts missing. Grading levels consider how severe the damage is. Collectors who are sensitive to video game conditions may not be interested in those in the bronze category.

    Collectible Grading Authority

    • Other divisions of the Collectible Grading Authority include the Action Figure Authority, the Collectible Doll Authority and the Die-Cast Authority in modern or standard categories. Toys in sealed packages produced from 1995 to present fall in the modern category. Standard category toys should be in unsealed packages or in new condition in the original package. Action figure toys have a special category for handmade prototype toys, rare and pre-production loose toys, and autographed toys.
