Greek & Roman Mythology in the Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda has a lot of Greek and Roman mythology underlying its complex quests. The main character, known as Link, has ventured on many different quests through the years. Each game in the series features new characters and story lines. After a while, you start to see similarities between ancient myths and the game.
  1. The Trojan War Parallel

    • The Trojan War is a Greek myth that tells the story of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. Helen is stolen by Paris, a man who wants her for his own, and is taken to the city of Troy. Many people go after Helen to rescue her and bring her back. This battle is known as the Trojan War. In the Legend of Zelda, princess Zelda is taken away by Ganon. Link must fight in order to save her. The parallel between the story of Helen and that of Zelda is imminent. Of course, Link does eventually save Zelda from Ganon's clutches, just as Helen is returned to her native homeland.

    Various Nymphs

    • Greek and Roman mythology has stories of various nymphs who live in the wild. Nymphs are magical creatures who are neither gods nor humans. They're something in-between. There are forest nymphs, known as Dryades, and water nymphs known as Naiads. In the Legend of Zelda, many forest and water creatures take very similar roles as the nymphs of Greek and Roman mythology. With every new land Link ventures into, he stumbles upon strange creatures who live there. Link even has a small fairy nymph who helps guide him on his quest.

    Life and Magic Giving Goddesses

    • Greek and Roman mythology has several stories of goddess who have the power to restore life, or grant magical powers. Clotho had the power to give life; Athena, Artemis and Diana had the power to grant magical favors. In the Legend of Zelda, Link replenishes his life and magic by visiting a fairy at one of the many sacred temples found on the game. This is similar to stories of men and women visiting goddess temples to ask for guidance and power.

    Hades/Pluto

    • Hades, or Pluto as known to the Romans, is god of the underworld. The underworld is where all the souls venture after their time on Earth has ended. The underworld is full of darkness and shadows. Ganon, from the Legend of Zelda, can be compared to Hades. Ganon brings the underworld to the inhabitants of Hyrule in order to gain more power and control. The walking dead appear, as well as many unhappy warriors from the underworld. In order to be defeated, Link must face Ganon and take away his power, returning him and all his minions back to where he came from.
