How to Troubleshoot the Super Nintendo Entertainment System

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, was the 16-bit follow-up to Nintendo's phenomenally popular NES console with updated 256-color graphics and 8-channel sound. Released in 1991, it eventually sold 49 million systems worldwide. More than 750 games were released in the United States, including the classic "Super Mario World" and a popular version of "Street Fighter II." Many SNES consoles are still in use today, but you may need to troubleshoot the hardware if it does not function correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you are using a licensed Nintendo AC adapter and AV cable and that all cables are undamaged. Unlicensed products may not function correctly.

    • 2

Firmly plug the AC adapter into the back of the console and into the outlet. Insert the AV cables with a slight twisting motion to fully seat the connectors, and make sure the video and audio cables are each plugged into the corresponding inputs on your TV.

    • 3

Switch the TV and RF Modulator to a different channel if you are using a RF hookup, and ensure it is the same channel (either 3 or 4). Disconnect the TV aerial from the RF switch, and adjust the tuning on your TV to clear up the signal.

    • 4

Press firmly on the game cartridge to make sure it is locked in place. Remove all accessories if you are having problems with a particular game, as the game and accessory may be incompatible.
