Find the Vlakorados monsters-- who look like red dragons-- in the grasslands near Bone Village. Continue to engage these monsters until you are able to steal several carob nuts from them.
Equip a chobobo lure materia and fly to Mideel Island. Walk in a circuit along the tracks there until you find and capture a great chocobo.
Fly to the Gold Saucer. With the materia still equipped, visit the chocobo tracks there until you find a good chocobo of the opposite sex. The chocobo farmer will confirm the quality and sex of a chocobo by deeming him "Fair," "Good," "Great" or "Wonderful" when you interact with the chocobo once it is in the stable.
Use the chocobo race mini games at the Gold Saucer to upgrade the classes of each of these chocobo as high as possible. This will often take winning nine races. Once that is done, mate the two together until you have both blue and green chocobos of the opposite sex.
Compete with both the blue and green chocobos in the Gold Saucer, once again winning nine races with each to raise them to the highest class possible. Mate them with a carob nut until you get a black chocobo.
Fly to the Icicle Inn with the chocobo lure attached, and wander there until you catch a wonderful chocobo of the opposite sex from your black chocobo. This will take time and patience. Once you have it, use the racing mini-game to raise its class.
Fly to the lone island at the north eastern part of the map, and walk around until you engage the area's Goblin enemy. Steal several Zeio nuts from them.
Mate the black and wonderful chocobos with the Zeio nuts until you get a gold chocobo.
