How to Soft Mod an XBox Without an Action Replay

By soft modding an Xbox game console you can use it as a media center and to play older video games. Soft modding is much more cost effective than buying a mod chip for the Xbox and it produces the same results. With access to a computer and the internet you can apply a soft mod to your Xbox in as little as one hour.

Instructions

  1. Making the Disc

    • 1

      Obtain Ndure 3.1 and xboxhdm 1.9 from the Internet.

      Run Ndure 3.1 and select your Xbox kernel version. In order to find out your kernel go to settings on the Xbox dashboard and select system Info. The kernel will show up in the scrolling text.

      Check create XBOXHDM installer and click the next button. The program will create a folder called "ndure".

      Open the xboxhdm folder and open up the Linux folder inside. Place the ndure folder inside the Linux folder.

      Go back into the xboxhdm folder and run "make-iso-win.bat" to create the .iso file for the disc.

      Burn the .iso file to a CD using the CD burning software of your choice.

    Opening the Xbox

      Flip your Xbox over so that you are looking at the bottom of it.

      Remove the four foam feet at the corners of the Xbox and feel for an indentation in the left side of the silver sticker, and an indentation in the bar code sticker at the bottom. Punch a hole in either of the stickers to reveal the screws underneath.

      Unscrew the two screws under the stickers, and the four screws at the corners using your T-20 screwdriver.

      Remove the case lid and a single T-10 screw in the center of the Xbox underneath the gray ribbon cable.

      Remove the hard drive tray and remove the two screws on the bottom of it to free the hard drive. Remove the hard drive from the plastic tray.

    Preparing the Computer

      Unplug the computer and move it to near where the Xbox is going to be set up.

      Open up the computer case by removing the back case screw or sliding the case clip and pulling the side panel off.

      Remove all of the hard drives in the computer case and plug it back in next to the Xbox.

      Plug a hard drive power cord from your computer into the Xbox hard drive, and plug the Xbox hard drive data cable into the hard drive at the same time.

    Performing the Swap

      Power on your computer and turn on the Xbox a few seconds later.

      Insert the disc you created into the computer disc drive.

      Go into the soundtracks on the Xbox and play a song. Stop the song a few seconds after it begins playing, the hard drive is now unlocked.

      Unplug the Xbox data cable and plug in the computer data cable.

      Turn off the Xbox as it is no longer needed.

    Modifying the Hard Drive

      Select option 1 when the Xbox HD Maker program starts up on your computer.

      Navigate to your Ndure folder on the disc and run Ndure.

      Place the Xbox hard drive back into the Xbox and close the Xbox up.

      Put the drives back into your computer and close the case. You now have a modded Xbox.
