How to Do Desperation Attacks in Final Fantasy VI

Desperation attacks in "Final Fantasy VI" are the forerunner to limit breaks found in later games in the series. As the name implies, a desperation attack is a powerful attack that is only performed in a dire situation. Almost all of the desperation attacks are magical attacks that do a large amount of damage and ignore defenses. Desperation attacks cannot miss. Gau and Umago are the only characters that do not have a desperation attack.

Instructions

    • 1

Add "Fight" to Gogo's command list in the status menu. This step is only required if you want Gogo to perform a desperation attack. He is the only character in "Final Fantasy VI" that can go into battle without the Fight command, which is required to perform a desperation attack.

    • 2

Fight against the enemy for at least 26 seconds. It is impossible to activate desperation attacks earlier in a battle than this.

    • 3

Cure or dispel any Zombie, Image, Invisible or Confusion status effects on the character. All of these status effects, despite Image and Invisible being beneficial effects, prevent desperation attacks from being used.

    • 4

Allow the character's hit points (HP) to drop until his current HP is less than an eighth of his maximum HP.

    • 5

Choose the "Fight" command during each turn. There is a one in sixteen chance of the desperation attack being performed each time you select this command.
