How to Troubleshoot Zelda Ocarina of Time on the N64

Problems with your Nintendo 64 system or the "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" game cartridge itself can disrupt your experience exploring Hyrule. Several problems can disrupt the gameplay experience. The player may not hear sound, graphics may appear glitched, the game may not appear when the system is turned on, or you may lack control over Link. Players can resolve all these gameplay issues without replacing items.

Ensure that "Ocarina of Time" is properly inserted into the Nintendo 64 system if the game will not turn on. The imagery on the front of the cartridge should point toward the front of the system. Press down gently on the cartridge to fully insert it into the system. Improper insertion can cause glitching in the game.

Insert another Nintendo 64 game into the system. Turn on the system. If other games experience gameplay problems, your Nintendo 64 may be damaged. Due to the age of the system, Nintendo no longer provides repair service. The player may need to replace the system.

Remove all accessories attached to the Nintendo 64 system, including cheat devices. All accessories used with the Nintendo 64 system should be licensed by Nintendo. Check for the official Nintendo seal on the product or its packaging to ensure it is licensed. Turn on the system once the accessories are removed. If normal gameplay resumes, the accessory may be the cause of the problem.

Examine the AV cable connections. One end of the cables should be firmly inserted into the back of the Nintendo 64, according to your system manual. Ensure that cables are not loosely inserted. The yellow end of the A/V cable should be inserted into the Video "In" outlet and the red end to the Audio "In" right. Insert the white end of the cable into the Audio "In" left outlet of a TV, VCR, DVD player or other system.

Clean the system controller if you are unable to control Link. Dampen a clean toothbrush in water and scrub around the buttons, control pad and joystick of the Nintendo 64 controller. Allow to dry for a few hours and plug it back into the system. If problems persist, try using another controller.

Turn off the Nintendo 64 system if you still cannot control Link. Turn on the system but do not touch the controller. The joystick must be in the neutral, centered position when the game starts. When the title screen appears, resume play as normal. You should now have control over Link.
