How to Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons on Intellivision

Intellivision is a classic game console released in 1979 for the home market. During its release, Intellivision produced 125 games, including "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Cloudy Mountain". This cartridge brought a randomly generated stripped down "Dungeons and Dragons" world to the console in which you controlled a small band of three adventurers out to find the two halves of the Crown of Kings. Though simple in play, to gain the full experience of playing, you'll need to know exactly what each of the 12 controller buttons does and just what each game icon represents.

Slide the paper overlay into the Intellivision controller to cover the number pad. Place the game cartridge into the slot on the right side of the console and then turn the console on. Wait for the opening menu to appear, then choose a difficulty level. The higher the level chosen, the fewer arrows available within the game and the faster the monsters move. After selecting a difficulty level, an overland map appears on the screen.

Locate your position on the map by searching for a small house icon, Your quest is to reach the volcano located on the other side of the map. To reach the volcano, you'll need to travel cross-country. Map icons represent various obstacles in your travel with black mountains representing dungeons, blue lines representing rivers requiring boats to cross, black lines are walls requiring keys to cross, dark green areas forests require axes to cross and brown mountains represent unpassable terrain. You can find the axes and boats within the dungeons.

Use the controller to move around the map, your party of three adventurers appear as three dots on the map background. Moving near dungeons changes the mountain colors. Gray dungeons are easy and contain arrows as treasure, blue are medium and contain boats and arrows, the red dungeons are medium hard with axes and arrows while the purple mountains are hard containing keys and arrows. Move your party onto a dungeon to enter.

Use the controller to move your party through the dungeons. The dungeons consist of corridors and rooms with your party represented by a single figure carrying a bow. As you move throughout the dungeon, use the pickup button to retrieve treasure from the floor. Press a directional key toward a monster to fire arrows -- the only weapon available -- at the creature. Most require one to three arrows to kill. Keep track of your arrow count by pressing the count arrow key. The game emits a beeping sound for each arrow in your quiver. Taking damage during combat will alter the color of your character icon changing it to blue with light damage, then red for heavy damage before death turns your character into a pile of ash.

Start the dungeon over at the entrance with a new character in your party and the same starting equipment when your present character dies. After collecting the loot from the dungeon, locate the ladder leading outside, then press the exit button.

    • 7

Pass obstacles by walking through them if you have the appropriate item in your inventory. Enter the final dungeon by stepping onto the volcano. Fight your way to the two crown pieces and win the game.
