Avoiding capture from the police in "Grand Theft Auto" requires players to reduce their "wanted levels." A player's wanted level increases when he commits a crime, such as stealing a car or firing at someone with a gun within a police officer's presence. A player's wanted level is illustrated by a police head on the screen and can range between one and four, depending on the severity and frequency of the crime committed. Police will pursue a player once he is wanted until he is captured. Players can reduce their wanted level by visiting a respray shop, which disguises his vehicle, or by finding "cop bribes," which appear as floating coins.
