How to Unlock Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," the mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik, is turning helpless animals into mindless robots. When Sonic and Tails arrive to put an end to his schemes, they are met by Knuckles, an echidna sent to stop them in their tracks. With the "Sonic and Knuckles" game cartridge, it is possible to play as Knuckles. This is because the "Sonic and Knuckles" game allows other games in the "Sonic" series to connect directly to it.

     Insert the "Sonic and Knuckles" game cartridge into the slot in your Sega Genesis.

     Lift open the expansion flap on the top of the "Sonic and Knuckles" cartridge. Insert the "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" cartridge into the expansion port.

     Power on the Sega Genesis. Select "New Game." Scroll through the character list to select Knuckles and then begin the game.
