Riding Epona
Travel to Lon Lon Ranch as Young Link after obtaining the Ocarina from Zelda and talk to Malon in the horse corral. She will teach you Epona's song.
Return to Lon Lon Ranch after becoming an adult later in the game and talk to Mr. Ingo. He will offer to let you ride a horse for ten rupees. Select "Yes."
Use your ocarina to play Epona's Song. Mount Epona after she runs toward you by pressing the A button.
Ride Epona around the horse corral until time expires.
Talk to Mr. Ingo again and pay another 10 rupees to ride a horse. Play Epona's Song again and mount Epona.
Talk to Mr. Ingo while mounting Epona. He will challenge you to a race for 50 rupees. Accept his challenge.
Winning the Race
Hold forward on the control stick before the race begins. This will allow you to get the fastest start possible.
Press the A button to use a carrot. This will speed Epona up and allow you to keep up with Mr. Ingo.
Stop using carrots when you reach the last one. Carrots replenish more quickly if you do not deplete all of them.
Continue using your second-to-last carrot as soon as it replenishes. This will allow you to pass Mr. Ingo and stay ahead of him until the race is over.
Obtaining Epona
Accept Mr. Ingo's second challenge. When you win the race, he will challenge you to a second race for ownership of Epona.
Defeat Mr. Ingo again.
Exit the ranch by mounting Epona and running quickly toward any of the fences in Lon Lon Ranch. Epona will jump over it. You can now use Epona to navigate Hyrule Field.
