How to Debug Ocarina of Time

Normally, debugging something entails bringing up a special menu so that you can solve an internal issue with the coding in the game or computer program. To debug "The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time," you must actively create the internal error by forcing the game to freeze up. By doing this, you can bring up the debug menu and see hidden messages from the programmers. Debugging your game cartridge may corrupt your save data, so use a game save file you don't care about to execute this feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the "Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time" cartridge into your N64 console and turn it on. Load any of your game files.

    • 2

Pull up on the left side of the cartridge very slowly until the graphics and sound become distorted. Hold the cartridge in place while this is happening until you see a yellow bar appear near the top of the screen.

    • 3

Release the cartridge once the yellow bar appears and pick up your controller. Hold down L and R, then press Z. Release these buttons, press and hold Up on the directional pad, then press C-Down.

    • 4

Release the buttons. Hold C-Up and press Down on the directional pad. Let go of the buttons, then hold Left on the directional pad and press C-Left. Let go of these buttons, hold C-Right and press Right on the directional pad. Release these buttons, hold A and B, then press Start.

Look at the debug screens for hidden messages encoded in the game's data. Reset your console and resume regular game play.
