How to Use the FCE Emulator

Nintendo Entertainment System games, or NES games, are no longer produced or sold in electronics stores. FCE Ultra is a program that gives you the ability to play classic games on your computer. The program, known as an emulator, opens copies of the NES games. The games then play just as the original cartridges on the gaming console. Using the Emulator involves finding game copies and changing the program's settings so you are comfortable playing the games on the emulator.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire games, known as "ROMs," that you want to play on the FCE Emulator. Such files are found at websites such as Cool ROM and ROM Nation.

Download and install the FCE Emulator. A Zip file extractor, such as WinZip or WinRAR, is required to install the emulator on the computer.

    • 3

Connect a controller to a USB port if you want to use one with FCE Ultra. Skip this step if you are fine using the keyboard with the emulator.

    • 4

Open the FCE Ultra folder that was installed. Open the "FCEUX.EXE" file in the folder. The FCE Emulator opens.

    • 5

Click "Config" at the top of the emulator; a menu appears. Choose "Input" in the menu. An "Input Configuration" window opens.

    • 6

Click "Configure" under the Port 1 heading in the window. A "Gamepad" window opens. Click on the different buttons inside the window -- for example the "B" button. Press the button on the keyboard or controller that you want to represent the chosen button. Do this until you are done configuring the keyboard or controller. Click "Close" to close the Gamepad window. Click "Close" to close the "Input Configuration" window.
