How to Get Past Zone 4 in Sonic 3 & Knuckles

Lava Reef Zone, the fourth zone in the Sega game, "Sonic and Knuckles," is packed with dangerous obstacles, deadly lava and pesky villains. The zone is made up of two short levels, each of which can be completed with careful timing and a little luck. Playing through the level and learning the layout is one of the most-effective methods for comfortably completing it, as Lava Reef Zone is the longest level in any classic Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid the periodic lava waterfalls present in both areas of this zone. Each waterfall will dump lava for a preset amount of time and then take a short break. Run through during the break to keep your rings.

    • 2

Watch out for exploding stones. This marks the first zone in which stones are present that will explode as you approach, costing Sonic his rings. These stones pop up from the ground a few seconds before exploding.

    • 3

Jump over spikes and keep an eye out for fireballs as there are several locations in each area with cannons.

    • 4

Watch out for spiked pillars. These appear in Area Two. To avoid them, wait until their spikes rotate into the background, then run by.

    • 5

Defeat the boss of Area One by dodging his lasers and hitting his giant hand when he attempts to smash you. Defeat Robotnik in Area Two by running across the falling platforms and forcing the mines he fires to run into him instead of you.

    • 6

Take it slow. It is tempting to go full-speed when playing Sonic games, but slowing down and playing it safe will be best until you are more familiar with the map.
