Instructions for Connecting an Old Nintendo to a TV

You can still play your classic Nintendo consoles on a new TV. All Nintendo consoles have multiple connection options, so odds are one of them will fit your TV. The NES, SNES and N64 all had the option of RF cables or composite cables, while the GameCube and Wii can also use component cables for games that support progressive scan. All TVs come with RF and composite connections and HDTVs offer component video connections as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the audio/video connectors on the Nintendo console. The connectors will either be RF, composite or component. RF connectors connect using a single coaxial cable for both audio and video. Composite connectors use a single yellow connector for video, and red/white connectors for audio. Component connectors use red/green/blue cables for video and red/white cables for audio.

Connect RF connectors by unscrewing the coaxial cable leading from the cable, satellite or antenna from the back of the TV. Screw the coaxial cable into the input jack on the a/v connector box and screw the output cable on the connector box into the RF input on the TV.

Plug composite connections from the Nintendo a/v connector box into the composite input jacks on the TV. Most TVs have the jacks on the back panel, but some have them on the sides as well. The jacks and cables are color coded, so plug the colored connector into the matching colored jack.

Plug component video cables into the matching colored component video jacks on the back of the TV. Some newer TVs also have component jacks on the side. Component video cables are only available for the GameCube and Wii.
