Instructions
Select either "1 Player" or "2 Player" at the start of the game. The first player will control Mario, while the second player will control Luigi. Both characters play identically.
Press the directional pad in the direction you want to move. Press "Down" on the directional pad while on top of green pipes to enter hidden areas.
Press and hold the "B" button on the controller while moving to run.
Press "A" to jump. Press "A" while running to do a running jump.
Press "A" when underwater to swim upward.
Jump on enemies to defeat them. Some enemies, like the Koopa Troopa or Buzzy Beetle, will go into their shell when jumped on. When they are like this, run into them to kick them across the screen. However, if they hit an obstacle they will bounce back and can injure you. Jump on them again to stop them. Enemies underwater can not be jumped on.
Jump under any block with a question mark to make an item appear. Items that can appear from the question mark block include coins, a Super Mushroom, a Fire Flower, a Starman or a 1-Up Mushroom.
Run into the Super Mushroom to become the larger Super Mario. Super Mario can break bricks by jumping under them and can duck by pressing "Down" on the controller. Additionally, when hit, Super Mario reverts back into regular Mario instead of dying.
Break blocks as Super Mario to reveal beanstalks that can take you to hidden areas. Press "Up" while next to a beanstalk to climb it.
Run into a Fire Flower to become Fire Mario. As Fire Mario, press "B" to shoot a fireball that will kill most enemies. Buzzy Beetle and Bullet Bill are the only enemies in the game immune to fireballs.
Run into a Starman to become invincible. While invincible, Mario will flash and any enemy he runs into will be instantly defeated.
Grab 100 coins to gain an extra life. Coins can be found floating in the air or in question mark blocks. Some question mark blocks may be jumped under ten times in a row to yield ten coins. Additionally, finding a 1-Up Mushroom instantly grants another life. Your lives are displayed at the start of every level and your coins are displayed at the top of the screen.
Move Mario or Luigi to the right until you reach the flagpole at the end of the level. Jump on the flagpole to finish the level; the higher up on the flagpole you jump, the more points you will get. Each level scrolls from left to right in the game. The time limit for each level is located in the top right corner of the screen. When the time runs out, you will lose a life.
Defeat Bowser at the end of fourth level in each world. Defeat Bowser by running under him or jumping over him and grabbing the axe at the other end of the bridge. You can also use fireballs to defeat him. There are eight worlds in all with four levels per world, numbered with the world first and then the level. For example, the first stage is 1-1.
